a picture of the president's wife, the first lady, michelle obama taking in the speeches here, she brought the house down with her own speech last night. once again tonight, bob schieffer is with me here in the anchor booth and our campaign 2012 team is down on the floor. bob, getting president clinton here to make this nomination speech tonight wasn't just a matter of asking him. what is the back story? >> no, you know, think about it, bill clinton's wife ran against barack obama four years ago and things have been a bit rocky between them since then. but about a year ago, the obama people began to make a concerted effort to get bill clinton on this stage tonight. it actually began with an invitation to play golf, then there were calls back and forth, he was asked his opinion on strategy and so forth, and so on, and now she here. they need him, because they think he can get through and talk to the pea people where they are weakest and that is white working class voters. >> bill clinton has become the rock star and tonight is going to be bill clinton night. >> in recent gallup polls presid
for a second term. this is michelle obama's night on the stage. we have our campaign 2012 team covering it. first we'll go to norah o'donnell, cohost of "cbs this morning." norah. >> reporter: scott, you know, if mitt romney was trying to make the case that president obama has failed to lead, first lady michelle obama tonight will argue that president obama is the only one who understands the struggles of middle class america. i spoke with several advisors to the obama campaign today who described this as a very personal speech. the first lady will talk about the values and experiences that drive the president every day in the oval office. she's going to remind viewers, of course, of her husband's personal story, growing up with a single mom, being raised by a working grandmother. we told there will be personal anecdotes about their marriage. the first lady will brag about the president in a way that only a spouse can do. she is going to tout a number of accomplishments including a bill that made it easier for women to sue employers who discriminate against them in the workplace, making co

: the best advocates for the candidates in both of these conventions have been their wives. michelle obama gave a stellar performance earlier this week, and you knew that the democrats just had to bring her back for an encore. that will be happening in just a few minutes when she returns to the podium to introduce her husband. the convention wasn't supposed to be here at all tonight. the plan was to have the president's speech outdoors in the stadium where the carolina panters play. there was to be a crowd of 65, 000, but they canceled that because of rain in the forecast. well, here is a live shot of that stadium now. it is dark, and there is not a drop of rain falling in the vicinity here in charlotte. we are now back in this arena. instead of a crowd of 65,000 listening to the president's acceptance speech, similar to what we saw in 2008 at mile high stadium in denver, we will have a crowd of about 20,000 in this arena. earlier today, mitt romney, the candidate of the republican party, said that he would not be watching mr. obama's acceptance speech. nancy cordes is down on the conventi
